Paper
Evaluation Sheet
As noted in "Characteristics of high quality papers and the grading
process," content and exposition are frequently linked. Thus, the
demarcation between content and exposition may not be as clear in practice as
it appears to be in this document. As rough guide:
Excellent: A
Acceptable: B/C
Poor: D/F
CONTENT
Content
- Excellent – Paper
demonstrates an excellent knowledge of key concepts and how those concepts
apply to the subject at hand.
- Acceptable – Paper
demonstrates a good knowledge of key concepts and there is some indication
that those concepts have been correctly applied to the subject at hand.
- Poor – Knowledge of key
concepts is suspect and / or application of concepts to subject at hand is
erroneous or poorly done.
Integration of key ideas
- Excellent –
Interrelationships between key concepts are well thought out and
explained. Paper convincingly captures the interrelated, multidimensional
nature of subject matter.
- Acceptable –
Interrelationships between key concepts addressed but not comprehensively.
- Poor – Weak or non-existent
attempt at integration of key concepts. Paper looks as though written by a
committee and assembled with only cursory thought to integration of
concepts.
EXPOSITION
Clarity/professionalism of writing
- Excellent – Paragraphs and
sentences flow smoothly. There are smooth transitions between ideas and
paragraphs. Interesting and entertaining to read.
- Acceptable – Grammar is
correct but marred by awkward wording, phrasing, sentence / paragraph
structure, etc.
- Poor – Grammatical errors,
phrasing awkward, paragraphs and sentences do not flow smoothly, difficult
to read.
Organization
- Excellent – Paper is well
organized and coherent / unified. Includes appropriate introduction and
conclusion without "fluff" (i.e., history of the company, etc.)
that does not directly advance the central aim of the paper.
- Acceptable – Paper is
somewhat difficult to follow but some attempt has been made to make the
paper flow. Reader has to wade through some material of questionable
relevance.
- Poor – Paper is difficult to
follow. Little or no attempt to guide the reader through the paper in a
logical manner. Might include significant amount of irrelevant material.
